Ever been at a loss as to what gift to give to a friend who’s sick? Me too. Flowers and stuffed animals are nice gestures but let’s face it, they aren’t very practical. When visiting a sick friend in the hospital, try to think outside the box on gift ideas.
Books & Magazines
Hospitals are boring. There’s only so much TV one can watch. Books and magazines make great gifts for your friend to pass the time. If your friend has a Kindle, look into getting a Kindle Unlimted subscriptions. Right now, they can try 30 days for free.
Adult coloring books are all the rage right now. Pick up one with a pack of colored pencils to give your loved one something new to do.
I personally love Starz’s “The Spanish Princess” and “The White Queen”. They are both perfect bingeworthy shows when ill.
Food & Drinks
Hospital food leaves something to be desired. Most people would love a gift of good food or drinks while stuck in the hospital. Make sure you talk to the medical staff first to inquire about any dietary concerns. I like to bring a reusable shopping bag of snacks and individual serving sized drinks to friends in the hospital.
Give the gift of you! Simply spending time with your friend is a great gift.
*Sherry brought up a good point that not everyone in the hospital might be able to entertain company. Check with your friend or family member before visiting. The last thing you want to do is to wear them out even more!
If your friend is not up for company, you can utilize technology at their convenience. I personally love the app “Marco Polo” to have video conversations like a text conversation.
Instead of purchasing a material gift, consider giving a gift or chores. Mow their lawn, come over to their house and do their dishes once they are released or fill their freezer with ready-made meals are all wonderful gifts.
If you are willing to do this type of gift, have specific suggestions ready. It can be hard to think of something when asked “what do you need?”. Being prepared with a list of options makes it a lot easier for your friend to decide.
Get your loved one some comfy pajamas to wear in the hospital. Or, bring them new loungewear to wear home.
Real Toilet Paper & Tissues
Yes, this a real suggestion. Hospital toilet paper and tissues are made out of sandpaper! Let your friend know how much you love them by grabbing a small pack of soft and plushy toilet paper to give to them.
A Good Cup of Coffee
It is impossible to get a good cup of coffee in the hospital. Swing by Starbucks on the way to visit your loved one and get them a delicious cup of coffee.
Hospitals are very loud. Bring some earplugs with you when you visit your friend. This is an exceptionally good gift if they have a roommate!
A Real Pillow
Have you ever used a hospital pillow? They are horrible. Maybe I’m just a pillow snob but I can’t stand them. Give a pillow to a sick friend in the hospital. It’s a practical gift they will love.
