"Undone is author Michele Cushatt’s quest to make peace with a complicated life. It is an honest confession of a diagnosis of cancer and the joys and disappointments of motherhood and marriage, ripe with regret over what is and, yet, still hopeful for what could be."
Undone by Michele Cushatt is a Non-Fiction book that deals with the diagnosis of cancer, joy, faith and forgiveness.
There is never a right time to receive bad news, especially not over a holiday. Undone starts with Michele learning of her cancer diagnosis over Thanksgiving. In the chapters that follow, she brings her readers into her personal thoughts, fears and struggles.
Michele was very honest and candid about her struggles with her own humanity, faith and relationships during this period of her life.
She wove her background into the book naturally. I felt that I made a friend while reading it. Unlike other memoirs I’ve read on the same subject, Undone was REAL. Michele does not pretend to be perfect. In fact, she is open and honest about her flaws. She is extremely easy to relate too.
While struggling with the diagnosis of cancer, Michele and her husband embark on another journey together when they add additional children to their house.
There were many sections of the book that I highlighted to refer back to later. But there was one section that made a significant impact on me.
While facing a cancer diagnosis and a complete change in her life, Michele begins to experience panic attacks and fear. She described her experiences with the panic attacks and her uncertainties of taking medication for it extremely openly. I have personally struggled with issues of health and anxiety. As a reader, I was able to relate to the struggles of having to come to the terms that we are all only human.
I had to highlight this sentence. And read it again. And again.
“But I’m tired of the fear and bouncing up and down with every unexpected wave. I want to know the secret to sleeping in the boat. Jesus answered my question with a question of his own, “Where is your faith?”
That is a question I’ve struggled to answer myself.
How would you answer it?
Undone made an impact on my life in ways I never expected. I highly recommend this inspirational, honest and candid book to anyone.
